Our team at Stordeo rejoice in the power of images. We heartily believe that "A picture is worth a thousand words", BUT a video is worth 1.8 million words. Pictures/photos and more importantly, videos, convey information and even a complex idea, so much more effectively and efficiently than words, no matter how descriptive or flamboyant they are. In an age where social media is a given and photos and videos are shared from cameras and other devices on a regular basis, we have discovered that a video has the ability to convey so much meaning with little or no explanation required.
The expression "Use a picture. It's worth a thousand words” is believed to have first appeared in a 1911 newspaper article quoting newspaper editor Tess Flanders discussing journalism and publicity. It is, however, generally believed that the modern use of the phrase stems from an article by Fred R. Barnard in the advertising trade journal Printers’ Ink, encouraging the use of images in advertisements that appeared on the sides of streetcars. One of the advertisements by Barnard appeared in an issue dated 10th March 1927 where the phrase "One Picture Worth Ten Thousand Words" is labelled a Chinese proverb. The Home Book of Proverbs, Maxims, and Familiar Phrasesquotes Barnard as saying he called it "a Chinese proverb, so that people would take it seriously” and is now widely attributed to Confucius. Nonetheless, it has become a popular idiom to convey the unique and somewhat magical message that can be sent using the power of images and to a much larger degree, videos. Even newspaper editors celebrate the power that images convey and devote more space to photographs on their front pages than they do words.
A picture can capture your idea succinctly and at Stordeo we would encourage you to take some time to appreciate the uncanny ability you have to convey one thousand words through one powerful picture and when that picture is translated into a video, think of the 1.8 million words you are conveying to your audience. It is all about perspective and at Stordeo, we believe we can help you capture your ideas and convey them through video, enabling your audience to capture your concept and brand with ease.
